2012 Airplane Surfboard Fee Guide For Surfers

Paying surfboard baggage fees suck!

Every year we call all the airlines and find out how much they are going to charge us for taking along our sleds to far-away destinations.

We do this as a service to you, the traveling surfer.

Most of the following airlines include a surfboard as part of your regular bag allowance and let that sled fly for FREE:

  • Virgin (Europe)
  • Interjet (Mexico)
  • Quantas (Australia)
  • Singapore (Asia)
  • South Africa (duh)
  • Air New Zealand

The following is the list of ‘you suck’ airlines and charge over $100 each way:

2012 Airplane Surfboard Fee Guide

Airline: Aer Lingus
Surfboard Fee: €30 (or equivalent payable online prior to departure) or a fee €40 (or equivalent, payable at the airport on the day of departure)

Specifications: For flights between Ireland and North America surfboard is part of the free allowance, normal excess baggage rates apply if the passenger carries excess to the free allowance.

There is no charge for Surf Boards for passengers traveling in Business class. Surfboards are subject to a fee of €30 or equivalent payable online prior to departure or a fee of €40 or equivalent, payable at the airport on the day of departure. This fee is charged each-way on outbound and return journeys.

Please note that Surf Boards must not exceed 2.77m in length (approx 110 inches) and must be packed in cushioning material such as bubble wrapping so as to protect them against damage.
